Lifting spirits to a higher plane
Jim Carson was diagnosed with throat cancer. Such a condition always catches us
off guard and traumatizes more than simply the patient or single person
affected. Among his desires, and cancelled by the priority of the disease was
the completion of his Private Pilots License.
Through his network of friends, he was introduced to Faces of Courage, a Tampa
non-profit that offers life-enriching experiences for those touched by
cancer. They provide comfort and care in unusual settings, often camp
experiences that allows a wonderful, though often too brief attempt at normal
living. Jim didnt need a camping experience. What he always enjoyed was the
opportunity of slipping the surly bonds of earth in an airplane under his own
control. He was well on his way to completing his Pilots Certification
Program, when he was diagnosed. Peggie Sherry, CEO of Faces of Courage asked:
What can we do that would offer him more than simple comfort, but a feeling of
happiness and accomplishment at the same time?
She reached out to CAIR FLIGHT INC, a local non-profit, which utilizes general
aviation aircraft and volunteer pilots flying missions of medical necessity and
for compelling human purposes. Peggie felt this would be a perfect CAIR FLIGHT
mission, and contacted Rick Wachstein, Executive Director, who indicated he
would arrange the flight as soon as possible.
Mr. Carson met Rick at St Petersburg International Airport, headset and logbook
in hand, and had an opportunity to take control of a complex, high performance
aircraft. In his words, I was about ready to give up...since my cancer
diagnosis I almost forgot how much I loved to fly. Flying directly over Tampa
International Airport was a first as was circling the Sunshine Skyway Bridge,
and demonstrated Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach upon returning to
the airport. He continued, Thanks for letting me fly over my church and house
All in all what can I say to express my sincere gratitude for a fantastic day!
He had the pleasure of raising the landing gear, and his own spirits, during
the aerial tour of Tampa Bay.
When asked about the CAIR FLIGHT program, Jim commented, its a wonderful
undertaking that will be beneficial to people emotionally as well as
economically and deserves the best.
CAIR FLIGHT is privileged to serve this community and its citizens. If you
